Our Mission

Explore eastern Japan’s story—Edo to Tokyo—

Japan’s history is often introduced to the world through Kyoto and the culture of the old capital.
This site tells a complementary, equally important story: the history and culture of eastern Japan, centered on Edo and Tokyo, and the distinctive processes that shaped them.
In the past, parts of the story of Edo Castle and the construction of Edo were treated mainly as tradition or legend.
But in recent decades, archaeological discoveries and historical research have clarified many aspects of these projects. Since around the 2010s, scholars have been able to explain the scale and reality of Edo’s construction—how it was planned, how materials and labor moved, and how cities in eastern Japan developed in their own way.
Even now, differences between eastern and western Japan—how they formed, how they connected, and how their cultures evolved—are not well understood outside Japan.
Our mission is to make that difference visible and accessible by presenting real places visitors can experience, supported by research and physical evidence on the ground.
